makedepend is a prerequisite for building OpenSSL. Yes, it would be nice if the INSTALL file, or the README, or the FAQ, mentioned this. But makedepend is widely used by open-source software (and by a lot of proprietary software as well).

It's readily available, as a simple Google search will show.

Are you sure your systems don't already have it installed? A typical AIX 6.1 system, for example, will have it in /usr/lpp/X11/bin, as part of the X11.adt.imake LPP, if that LPP is installed. (It's an optional LPP that's included in the AIX installation media, if memory serves.) /usr/bin/X11 is a symlink to /usr/lpp/X11/bin. Is /usr/bin/X11 in your path?
