Oops...  Work-around below:

    # Create parent directories for missing "openssl-1.0.2e" nodes
    $ tar ztvf openssl-1.0.2e.tar.gz |
       awk '/ -> / {print $(NF-2)}' |
       sed -e 's,/[^/]*$,,' |
       sort -u |
       xargs mkdir -p

    # Symlink "openssl-1.0.2e" to "." in each
    $ tar ztvf openssl-1.0.2e.tar.gz |
       awk '/ -> / {print $(NF-2)}' |
       sed -e 's,/[^/]*$,,' |
       sort -u |
       while read d; do (cd $d; ln -s . openssl-1.0.2e); done

    # Extract the tarball
    $ tar zxf openssl-1.0.2e.tar.gz

    # Clean up
    $ find openssl-1.0.2e -name openssl-1.0.2e -type l -print0 | xargs -0 rm
