i had commented out the problem code in order to move forward; i just
uncommented it and reran the test and now it works. there must have
been some commenting error on my part. now i have a stack trace in
CMS_verify to chase down. as i've spotted some things in my code that
need to be adjusted, i'll not bother anyone with questions about that
just now.
