[openssl-users] What is the purpose of util/mkdef.pl

Hi,
I have one question about the purpose of mkdef.pl.
I noticed that some errors occur when I add my own function to the openssl
library and compile it omitting a command lke this 'perl utile/mkdef.pl ssl
update OR perl utile/mkdef.pl crypto update'.
What is the mkdef.pl? and Why I need to update that file?
