I am already using the ERR_error_string(), but the result is still
opaque to me.

Error string : error:00000005:lib(0):func(0):DH lib 

The FAQ says this is the format is:
[pid]:error:[error code]:[library name]:[function name]:[reason
string]:[file name]:[line]:[optional text message]

Which I interpret to mean:
    error: 5
    library: 0
    function: 0
    reason: DH lib

which I don't find to be helpful at all.
