Errors building 1.1.1 on RHEL 7

In reading the various README and INSTALL files, I'm not entirely clear on what this means.  I'm guessing:

1. During the build, the makefile ld flags have to include the variant -opt to get the right libraries to link.

2. Not at all clear on what the "_OPT" part means - do I need to change my source code to use this for accessors or ???
